Having Three-Way Coaching Conversations and Conducting Remedial Coaching
Coaching Community of Practice March 2022
Purpose
To ensure we all understand:
- The purpose of three-way conversations
- How to conduct them
- Challenges and how to respond
- Importance of confidentiality
- The purpose of remedial coaching and how it differs from standard coaching
Why We Have Three-Way Conversations
- To share 360 feedback
- To co-create or share development goals
- To gain clarity about coaching goals and intent (particularly for remedial coaching)
- To facilitate a development discussion between leader/coachee and their manager*
- Sometimes there may be some 'history' that we will need to manage**
*Caution required – ensure you have got all relevant background information from the coachee about the relationship and prepared them for the 3-way chat. It will depend on your comfort level and the original scope, as to whether you engage in a conversation with a problematic relationship
What You Need to Be Aware Of
- Is the manager the sponsor – i.e., have you had a three-way conversation at the very beginning of the contract (often the case with remedial coaching*).
- Who sets it up – where does the invite come from? Ideally coachee
